Deputy Director, Research & Metrics, TUESDAY 20, DECEMBER 2011


PSI’s Research & Metrics (R&M) Department seeks a Deputy Director to help lead a global team of researchers to generate evidence that influences social marketing decision making and helps the organization maximize its health impact. The Deputy Director will implement R&M’s strategic plan and lead its capacity building program. He/she will also supervise field-based research staff and some DC-based researchers. Successful candidates will be skilled at communicating about research to technical as well as non-technical audiences and motivated by working in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary setting. Candidates must excel at collaboration and developing relationships across functions to maximize performance. Preference will be given to those with management experience, field-based research experience, and expertise in social marketing and program evaluation. The position is based in Washington, D.C, will require up to 25% travel, and reports to the Director of Research & Metrics.
RESPONSIBILITIES The Deputy Director will:
•Work with R&M’s Director to implement a five-year strategic plan to plan and use research that is relevant for internal decision making as well as strategic within the fields of social marketing and public health;
•Develop a global strategy for building capacity among research and non-research staff. Adaptation of existing tools and development of new and innovative tools is required as well as collaboration with other capacity building departments, technical departments, and projects;
•Supervise regional and health area researchers in collaboration with line managers. Duties include recruiting and hiring research talent, ensuring that researchers work to global research standards, assisting with research and marketing planning processes, shaping researchers’ annual goals and routinely reviewing progress toward those goals, and ensuring that researchers have the necessary resources to succeed in their work;
•Provide technical support to global R&M team on quantitative and qualitative research, including study design, data analysis, and report writing;
•Participate in interdisciplinary working groups to develop research tools that are responsive to stakeholder needs;
•Develop partnerships with external institutions and programs working in public health in developing countries to meet and share best practices in research;
•Contribute to the fields of social marketing and public health by authoring articles and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; presenting at conferences and meetings; and documenting lessons learned for internal and external stakeholders; and
•Provide other research and social marketing technical assistance as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
•PhD with at least 7 years of relevant experience in public health, anthropology, psychology, sociology, population studies, communications, or a related field; A Masters degree plus 10 years experience within a social marketing or market research context will be considered in lieu of a PhD;
•Supervisory experience in a research setting;
•Experience developing capacity of research staff at multiple levels;
•Ability to develop research training tools and materials for a variety of contexts, learning curves and needs;
•Experience implementing and/or managing the implementation of quantitative and qualitative research; strong program evaluation skills;
•Highly organized, comfortable working on multiple simultaneous projects; great at meeting deadlines;
•Ability to travel up to 25% of the time internationally;
•Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in low- and middle-income countries, knowledge of public health issues and social marketing, ability to speak French, Spanish, or Portuguese, and/or familiarity with the international donor development community.
