Scope:
We’re looking for a smart, detail-oriented, process-savvy Technical Writer to create a crisp and comprehensive internal application user manual for the IRC’s International Programs Department (IPD) Time and Effort Tracking system. He/she will work closely with a cross section of current users and business owners within IRC’s IPD, IT and Finance departments to document extant system processes and create a user manual and associated instructional and informational materials for all users and administrators. The Technical Writer will prepare regular (at least weekly) status reports, and work closely with the Deputy Vice President of International Programs on project management timelines and deliverables.
Responsibilities: • Quickly become familiar with the IRC’s custom-built Time & Effort Tracking system, from the end user, supervisor, payroll and system admin perspectives • Review existing application user manual to identify deficiencies, areas for improvement, and appropriate ancillary instructional and informational materials to best support application use and training; • Work closely with IPD Senior Budget Officer (System Administrator); Technical Unit Program Managers; select employee users; Payroll staff; and IT staff to understand application use and underlying business processes; • Develop project work plan including timeline and detailed task list matched to clear deliverables (see below); and • Create enhanced internal application user manual and all supporting instructional and informational materials
Deliverables • Project workplan for development of user manual and related materials • Written analysis of current system user manual, identifying gaps, ways to improve it, and recommended supporting instructional and informational materials • Enhanced and improved application user manual and agreed upon instructional and informational materials
Requirements: • 5+ years of experience in writing technical documentation for complex software applications • Business process analysis skills and experience • Proven track record of extracting information from technical subject matter experts and system specifications and translating that information for various end users • Proven ability to develop compelling and clear application user manuals or document internal application processes • Experience working as an independent contractor • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment (without losing a sense of humor) • Top-notch writing, editing, and presentation skills • Fast learner, creative problem solver
Pluses: • Familiarity with time and effort or grant effort reporting systems • Experience in the non-profit sector
