One of Save the Children UK’s four organisational priorities for 2010 was to develop the operational capacity and raise the income of country programmes in 12 targeted fragile states. In order to achieve this end, the Fragile States Project was initiated in 2009 by the Capacity Building & Preparedness team of the Humanitarian Department and is implemented in coordination with other key departments in the organisation.
Save the Children as an organisation is committed to supporting and strengthening the controls and effectiveness of all of our operations. To further strengthen this support, a number of key “cornerstones” have been identified as a framework on which effective and quality programming relies and a project developed to address these.

The goal of both the “fragile states” and “project cornerstones” initiatives is to increase and sustain the capacity of these targeted country programmes to operate rapidly, at scale, safely and securely, effectively and efficiently, and to ensure that they achieve adequate ratings from the internal audit process, indicating a measure of effective control of risk for these programmes – operating in some of the most challenging of environments.
