PROGRAM BACKGROUND Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital (WAKH) is the largest teaching hospital in Afghanistan (210 beds), with the largest residency training programs in the country (general surgery, orthopedics and internal medicine). It serves as the major referral and trauma center in Afghanistan, with approximately 600 patients admitted, 5,000 OPD consultations and 750 surgical procedures monthly.
International Medical Corps' objective for this project is to provide technical assistance focusing on maintaining essential hospital services and facilities, while at the same time upgrading medical staff skill levels to improve clinical services to patients, and advancing hospital management and support systems. The goal of the Wazir Akbar Khan Support Project (WAKH-SP) is to strengthen the provision of high quality tertiary care in Afghanistan. This project is intended to continue to strengthen Afghanistan’s overall health system, by focusing resources on one of the most significant tertiary care facilities in the country.
JOB SUMMARY The primary responsibility of the Physical Therapist is to provide training and hands-on care which will upgrade the skills and knowledge of local counterparts in basic, up-to-date physical therapy/rehabilitative medicine practices. The duration of the assignment is two months, with a possible extension.
The physical therapist will work in the Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital alongside the existing physiotherapy and orthopedic staff to provide training in assessing and managing physical therapy (trauma, non-operative and post-operative orthopedic) cases. She/he will have training and certification in physical therapy and should have worked at least three years in physical therapy. She/he should have good communication skills and assumes responsibility and accountability for their practice, applying up-to-date knowledge and skills in caring for each patient. He/she works as a member of a team that includes all staff of the hospital.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Work with the WAKH Chief of Orthopedics, Head of Physiotherapy and the International Medical Corps Medical Coordinator / Advisor to create and implement a training curriculum to coincide with the length of stay. 2. Provide hands-on training and assist existing physiotherapy and orthopedic staff to appropriately manage those patients who would benefit from physical therapy/rehabilitative practices. 3. Participate in orthopedic teaching wards rounds, case conferences and other in-service education, offering a strong physical therapy presence and perspective. 4. Advise/train on patient education and counseling in relevant areas of rehabilitative practices. 5. Advise when specialized assistance is necessary (consultation or referral). 6. Train/advise nursing staff on care of orthopedic patients, relative to initiation of rehabilitation and physical therapy. 7. Share relevant knowledge, skill and expertise with surgical, medical and nursing staff concerning their scope of practice and standards for good, professional practice. 8. Advise on continuing professional development and medical education opportunities, including skills in in-service presentations and research methods. 9. Follow established departmental policies, procedures and objectives; continuous quality improvement initiative; safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards. 10. Assist/train in the supervision and monitoring of all the activities of the physical therapy department. 11. Assist/train the physical therapy team to identify and report any problems which interfere in the delivery of services or in achieving improved patient outcomes. 12. Assist the physical therapy team in improving the department’s administrative and human resource functions which will lead to improved patient outcomes. 13. Participate in relevant hospital administration and management meetings to share information and discuss the program’s progress. 14. Assist the Chief of Party and Medical Coordinator / Advisor in developing reports and updates.
REQUIREMENTS • Board Certified physical therapist, preferably with overseas experience • Fluent written and spoken English • Knowledge of Dari, Urdu, Hindi an advantage • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office • Ability to work well with others; culturally and socially sensitive • Must have excellent communication and inter-personal skills • The ability to work with a broad spectrum of people: experience in effectively dealing with international staff with ability to relate to and motivate staff effectively • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations
LANGUAGES • Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret, technical and non-technical in the English language. • Knowledge of Dari, Urdu, Hindi an advantage
