Doctors of the World is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader who has the passion and leadership skills to establish and develop its new branch in the United States.
Doctors of the World, also known internationally as Médecins du Monde or MdM, is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to vulnerable populations both at home and abroad, helping those affected by conflict, natural disasters, disease, poverty or exclusion. Branching off from Médecins sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders in 1980, MdM has grown into an international network with branches in 14 countries, projects in 88 countries, and an annual budget of $160 million. Although MdM’s primary aim is to provide medical care, our work goes further to ensure long-lasting effectiveness. We draw on our experiences on the ground to advocate on health and Human Rights issues.
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the MdM-USA Board of Directors, and ensuring regular contact with the MdM International Network, the General Director provides day-to-day internal and external leadership for MdM-USA. As a member of the MdM International Network, MdM-USA aligns with the MdM Network’s strategies, policies and practices. Accordingly, the MdM-USA General Director has a strong working relationship with the MdM International Network Head Office.
More specifically:
- Provide strategic leadership to the organization during its first “start up” years of development, translating its mission into specific strategies, efficient protocols, and concrete actions; be accountable for the achievement of the organization’s objectives : With the Development Director, establish MdM-USA’s fundraising program, in partnership with the board, to ensure that the organization meets or exceeds its fundraising goals. Establish an excellent recruitment program to attract highly motivated U.S. personnel, particularly healthcare professionals, for MdM’s international programs as well as for MdM’s programs in the United States. Guide the process of developing outstanding domestic programs in the United States With the Executive Committee, champion the mission of MdM-USA and the MdM Network, serving as a U.S. spokesperson for the MdM Network to weigh in on key humanitarian debates.
- Oversee internal operations, finances and programs with an eye to develop MdM-USA’s status as a well-managed, fiscally-sound, highly-respected organization and highly-rated 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
- Support the board of directors in its governance role, partnering with it to define MdM-USA’s mission and vision, and to define and achieve MdM USA’s goals.
- With the Development Director, develop and maintain relationships with strategically important individuals and organizations, including individual donors, foundations, and government donors, multilateral institutions, media, the MdM International Network Head Office and MdM Network members. Pilot grant-writing and reporting efforts for MdM-USA and MdM Network projects.
- Oversee MdM’s communications strategy according to MdM-USA’s mission, vision, and goals.
- Identify areas of collaboration where MdM-USA will make high-impact contributions to MdM’s international programs.
Located in New York City
Experiences and Education required: Have a minimum of five years senior level leadership experience with an NGO, with a strong preference for having prior work experience with a member of the Médecins du Monde International Network. Demonstrate experience in representing an organization at the senior level of partners, governmental and intergovernmental agencies, private sectors and donors. Have a proven track record in leading the development of multi-faceted fundraising operations as well as experience with budgets and administrative/operational systems. Be a gifted communicator with the ability to digest complex issues and make a compelling case that stirs people into action and generates support. Have an inspiring leadership style with a successful track record of building an organization and supporting high-functioning teams. Any experience in New York should be made explicit in application. Possess a Bachelor’s degree; graduate degree preferred.
Languages required: Fluent French and English (oral and written) mandatory
