Description : One of South America’s fastest growing mining companies seeks a Project Manager for an expatriate long term contract position on its projects in South America.
PLEASE NOTE: Regrettable, we are unable to consider candidates who do not have prior mining industry experience, this is a crucial requirement and NOT negotiable.
The Project Manager will lead the execution of one or more of the Company’s development projects. Acting as the main interface for all key stakeholders in a project, and provide leadership for project management, contractor interfacing, project communication, capital budget establishment and control, estimating, scheduling and change management. The incumbent will have responsibility for day-to-day management and execution of projects. He/she will consult with senior management and other project stakeholders, as appropriate, for resolution of major project issues that may arise from time to time.
Qualifications : EDUCATION
• A recognized Bachelors or Master’s degree in Engineering is required (Mechanical, Process/Metallurgical, Electrical or Mining being preferred).
• Registration as a professional engineer or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer is considered to be desirable.
• A business degree would also be an asset.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE EXPECTATIONS INCLUDE:
• 15 or more years’ experience in project execution and management of multi-disciplinary teams within the minerals extraction/processing fields, preferably in developing countries. The experience should encompass each of the main phases of project development from conceptualization through to commissioning. Significant experience in leading a project through the early stages of development (scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies as well as permitting,) through to construction and commissioning is key.
• Very strong written and verbal communication skills are a fundamental requirement of this position. These skills should include listening, negotiation and open minded discussion with regard to potentially contentious issues.
• Demonstrated experience in negotiation and amicable resolution of service provider/construction contractor claims is desirable.
• A strong track record in report writing, particularly for scoping and feasibility studies, is critical to this role. Familiarity with the requirements of the Canadian National Instrument NI 43-101 style reports is also important. Advanced written and verbal competency in English is mandatory while Spanish will be an asset.
• Familiarity and direct experience with the tools, work sequence, planning, resource requirements and limitations of engineering service providers and construction contractors is highly desirable.
• Direct experience with planning and coordination of technical aspects of a project, involving the owner, engineering consultants, suppliers and construction contractors, is required.
• Sufficient technical and management experience to identify internal and external project resource needs is important.
• The candidate should be familiar with and comfortable with constraints and limitations associated with work in developing countries, in remote locations and amongst cultures other than his own.
• Familiarity with and use of project controls techniques/tools for successful performance measurement and adjustment.
• Proven experience in estimate preparation and capital budget development/control. Familiarity with project scheduling methods and tools, using MS Project and/or Primavera is important.
• Knowledge of applicable mining regulations, safety standards and practices relevant to international companies operating in the Americas.
• Although not mandatory, an understanding of typical/acceptable environmental practices and requirements would be helpful as this impact the feasibility/approval and construction process.
