Field Director, Iraq


  1. Description of Role:
War Child UK is working with UNICEF and OCHA ERF to implement child protection and access to education projects in southern Iraq. These projects are currently managed remotely from London, and implemented by a team of national staff in Iraq. We are recruiting a Field Director who can: line manage and lead the national team; identify opportunities to increase the scale, reach and effectiveness of our work; develop relationships with new donors; and secure the funding necessary to sustain and grow the programme. This post is currently funded until December 2011 (i.e. for 6-7 months depending on start date). The Field Director will be based in London but will travel to Amman and Basra for 3 weeks, every 6 weeks. Subject to funding and security, the contract will be extended and the post moved from the UK to southern Iraq. Salary: £31k p.a. plus benefits.
  1. Essential Requirements:
(i) Experience
3-5 years experience of: o Effectively leading and managing teams o In the delivery of child protection, education and livelihoods projects o Which combine direct service delivery, capacity building, and advocacy o Through direct implementation and in partnership with state and non-state actors o With funding from institutional donors such as UNICEF, OCHA, IOM and / or USAID o In insecure environments
(ii) Expertise
o Team leadership and management, with a participatory rather than autocratic style o Excellent interpersonal skills o Child protection, education and livelihoods o Project management o Proposal writing and grant reporting o Security management o Financial management o Fluency in Arabic (speaking & reading) and English (speaking, reading & writing) o Participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation o Developing and managing partnerships with state and non-state actors o Capacity building state and non-state actors o Excellent IT skills o No criminal record / CRB checked
(iii) Qualities
o Team player and supportive of colleagues o Positive and proactive problem solver o Calm under pressure o Trustworthy, transparent and accountable o Diplomatic o Effective negotiator
