Copyeditor/Multimedia Coordinator


Description: The Peace Operations Training Institute is a small non-profit organization that develops and distributes training material for United Nations peacekeepers and humanitarian relief workers. We are based in Williamsburg, Virginia, but our training courses are taken by military and civilian students located around the world, including many troubled areas: from Haiti to Ivory Coast to Timor-Leste.
We seek an experienced Copy Editor and Multimedia Coordinator to provide support to the Content Department in ensuring soundness of content, clarity of language, and richness of learning experience. The applicant’s duties will include but are not limited to:
Copy Editor Tasks (approx. 75%)
• Proofreading and copyediting documents and course texts with precision
• Formatting documents in desktop publishing layout per prescribed guidelines
Multimedia Coordinator Tasks (approx. 25%)
• Creating and maintaining multimedia projects, e.g. course author videos
• Overseeing a color management system for courses and publication artwork
• Cultivating and expanding current multimedia enhancements to augment and enhance course texts
Applicant should have an observant eye and a very strong attention to detail. Applicant should also be self-motivated, dependable, flexible, comfortable taking direction, and comfortable working at a high volume when necessary.
Applicant must be able to:
• Maintain high standards of accuracy, consistency, and professionalism in all editing and formatting tasks
• Follow instructions and pre-established guidelines faithfully
• Establish priorities and plan, coordinate, and monitor his/her own work plan
• Manage multiple tasks and projects
• Communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Work experience in copyediting
• Strong proficiency in MS Word
• Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
• Knowledge of film editing techniques and programs, such as iMovie
• Knowledge of color management issues and techniques
Highly desirable:
• Comprehension of a second language (French or Spanish preferred)
• Prior experience working with ebooks and the .epub format
Compensation will be $40 – 45,000, commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with retirement, group health insurance, and paid vacation. The work will be done at our Williamsburg, VA, office.
