Performs work related to planning and development of archeological/heritage resources program policy, objectives, and priorities.

Accomplishes management functions associated with the operation and execution of specific archeological expeditions and assignments. Conducts and/or oversees archeological examinations of road, reservoir, recreation, and other ground disturbing projects where archeological materials may be subject to destruction or damage. Identifies, evaluates, and classifies resource needs. Plans and executes surveys for the location and verification of archeological and historical sites. Provides guidance in marking, protection, and salvage of these sites.

Performs work evaluating and ensuring that scientific and systematic procedures are followed in identifying, evaluating, and classifying cultural resource areas.

Provides technical assistance, consultation, and guidance on archeological studies, programs, and projects. Provides advice on the identification and management of cultural resources.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Grade 09: BASIC REQUIREMENTS



A. 1. Applicants must show successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

--History of archeology.

--Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.

--Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or

portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for

regional specialization for professional development.

--Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to,

typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and

analytical techniques.

--Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical

and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preser-

vation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field

work.

AND

--Six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural

geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental

studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying;

AND

--Archeological field school.

OR

2. Related Curriculum----Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplies academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

OR

B. Combination of education and experience----College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

OR

C. Experience----Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as part of a larger archeological project.


ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had either specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below. Education and experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements.

1. The applicant must have completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree when it provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

2. One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7.

Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Grade 11: BASIC REQUIREMENTS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION
Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the Work History section of the online application. Specialized experience at the GS-09 level includes, but not limited to; assisting in conducting performance studies and assisted in examining historical research documents pertaining to project development; evaluating archeological accuracy in the reporting of survey or excavation findings; and/or assisting in implementing corrective measures within the framework of archeological program requirements.

Specialized experience at the GS-11 level includes, but not limited to; assisting higher-grade archeologists with establishing acceptable criteria to judge program effectiveness including archeological program components such as accurate scientific reporting of survey or excavation findings; evaluating well-precedented problem areas such as archeological site protection, and implementing corrective measures within the framework of archeological program requirements; assisting in archeological program implementation for a program with clearly precedented program activities and design; and/or performing standard tasks or portions of larger projects in evaluating the progress of an archeological program.

Specialized experience at the GS-12 level includes, but not limited to; independently establishing acceptable standards to judge the effectiveness of an archeological program that included a variety of program elements such as accurate scientific investigation of archeological cases or studies; ensuring implementation of an archeological program of moderate complexity covering one or more specific types of resource areas and has wrote edited, and prepared cultural resource interpretive information based on synthesis of archeological and historical research; evaluating a wide range of problem areas such as the factual reporting of excavation or survey findings, and implemented corrective measures within the framework of archeological program requirements; and/or developing, coordinating, and reviewing moderately complex archeological programs that included program components such as the protection of historic properties and artifacts, and compliance with historic preservation laws.
